In the post-Soviet space, the franchise S.T.A.L.K.E.R. became cult to some extent: while in the West it remained almost unnoticed. However, people have formed around it a huge community of modders, writers, role-players and other fans. Not surprisingly, the announcement of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was received by gamers with great enthusiasm, and in this article, I’ve collected all the information about the upcoming game from GSC Game World.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is in active development phase
Even after the release of Call of Pripyat, GSC Game World announced the creation of a full-fledged sequel, which was planned for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. However, traditionally for the studio, “production hell” happened, as a result of which STALKER 2 development was frozen, and the team of game devs – disbanded.
Former GSC employees set up their studios and set about doing what they did best – post-apocalyptic games. So, there were Survarium and Fear the Wolves from Vostok Games and the Metro 2033 series from 4A Games.
Until 2018, nothing was heard about the project until Sergey Grigorovich, the head of GSC Game World, announced the resumption of development – and this is a new project, not the old-new one. The promo website, launched along with the announcement, showed the numbers 126.96.36.199, which many perceived as the year of release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. However, it was later confirmed that this is an ARG game that hides the details of the upcoming shooter, and gamers are still struggling to solve the puzzles left by the developers. So far, we only know about the number “35” and the mysterious message that was left by an unknown character: it says that he is used to being alone and ready to wait.
GSC is in no hurry to reveal all the cards: about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 little is known. The developers say that they are inspired by the original trilogy and strive to repeat the very unique atmosphere that contributed to the formation of the unique image of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and gathered around the franchise a solid core of fans. Also, according to GSC, it will be a modern AAA game using current technologies (possibly even with ray tracing).
In the meantime, we can only assume the content of the upcoming game. We are waiting for a new trip to the Chernobyl Zone, with stalkers, monsters, and anomalies – this is what should remain unchanged. Other aspects, such as role-playing elements, a life simulation system, and the influence of player actions on plot development, remain secret. I hope that the world will finally become truly seamless in this game.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Trailer
Unfortunately, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 trailer has not yet been published. Do not believe the videos that appeared on the web – this is a fake. I will add the trailer as soon as it appears on the Internet.
There are no screenshots of the interface and gameplay either. At the moment we got from devs only a screenshot of the bread made with UE4.
Fortunately, not. This time, GSC did not reinvent the wheel and create a new engine for the game, but took Unreal Engine 4, proven over the years with hundreds of good games made on it.
Yes, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is being developed with UE4, and this is rather good news than bad: the flexibility of the engine will make it possible to create a rich world, full of content and effects (it is known that photogrammetry technology is used in development), and it will also make modding the game convenient and affordable for everyone.
Given that the original games of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series still alive thanks to the support of mods, it is not surprising that the sequel will also be modable. The developers promise functional tools for creating custom modifications, and gamers will likely continue to develop and improve the game over the years.
Mod makers took the news about the development of the game on Unreal Engine 4 positively, remembering the problems with the X-Ray engine, which was poorly optimized, replete with bugs and turned the creation of mods into a disaster.
Multiplayer in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
In an interview with AIN.UA, GSC PR manager Zakhar Bocharov said that he could not yet say whether the online component would be implemented in the game, but noted that in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 there won’t be any loot boxes and no Battle Royale mode.
Based on modern realities, I won’t be surprised if multiplayer appears in the game. And since the interest in the Battle Royale genre is gradually decreasing, it is not unusual that it will not be implemented in the game. However, if you are interested in the Battle Royale games, you can check out this article about the PUBG-like games.
Release Date of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
Still kept secret. The developers promise to announce a release date in 2020, and I hope that this time the wait will not be delayed for a long seven years.
Vostok Games involved in the development?
And finally – a small piece of information for consideration. The Vostok Games studio, formed by former GSC Game World employees and noted for the post-apocalyptic games of Survarium and Fear the Wolves, announced the search for people to work on the “new AAA shooter of the world-famous franchise.” Moreover, developers need programmers who have experience with the Unreal Engine 4 engine.
Of course, many compared this with available information about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and suggested that Vostok Games help GSC develop the game. However, while there was no official confirmation for the info, all this is nothing more than speculation.
That’s all folks. Let me know in the comments below if I’ve missed something and tell me if you are waiting for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Cheers!
